Tuesday 8th March – Ski **** cloudy and snow – Lelex ( 25.69 kts – 27 n/miles )

We had a good night’s sleep in the car park below the church in Lelex with only one other camper to keep us company. We were woken around eight by the sound of the snow plough clearing the car park as it had snowed in the night and was still snowing lightly! With sunshine forecast for 10 this morning we were undeterred and got up early for our first day’s skiing in nearly a year!!! We had the picnic packed, cleared the six inches of snow off the van so I could get the skis out of the top box, struggled into cold ski boots all by ten in the morning just as the blue sky started to appear:)
It was a short walk across the road to buy the lift passes about 60 Euros for two including 1 Euro for a piste map! Not a bad price. It was then a long cable car up and the scenery was stunning with heavy snow laden pines and a foot of fresh powder :) I took the route through the snow park and had fun in the deep snow under the Telecabine de la Catherine while Mag enjoyed the quiet piste down to the Telsiege des Logges lift which took you to the top – Monthoisey at 1680m and if anything it was even prettier up here:) the only trouble now was it had started to snow and the cloud had come in making for poor visibility:( There is a huge area of off piste here and I made the most of this skiing down under the lift while Mag had a top run down the fantastic green – Anemones meeting up at the six sit Loges lift. We used this lift several times more exploring the runs down both sides until at around midday. It started to snow heavy and you could see next to nothing at the top so unusually for us we stopped at the restaurant at the top of the cable car for a delicious hot chocolate. With the weather still bad we decided to push the boat out and get a portion of frites – that’s 10 Euros (Nearly 2 days’ food money for us usually!!!) We ate them with our picnic rolls and lovely they were too:)
We even had a chat with another English couple from Kent who owned a holiday cottage in North Norfolk! With not much improvement in the weather we decided to brave the conditions again and spent the afternoon on the lower slopes using the cable car. Lelex is another top little quiet French resort and we are keen to have another ski here on a sunny day, there is also a nice snow shoe hike across the mountain to the next peak of the Cret de la Neige 1720m which we hope to do.
With legs now shot to pieces we call it a day and head to the bottom where we search in vain for the bread shop and supermarket and drew a blank:( So it was back to the van for a cuppa, read and a doze before having a stroll through town later checking out a few of the gift shops, we even managed to find the little supermarket:)
